Tobey Maguire is totally onboard with Andrew Garfield playing Peter Parker in "The Amazing Spider-Man."
"I was certainly curious as to who was going to play Peter Parker," Maguire told Garfield during a conversation between the actors published in VMan Magazine. "When I heard it was you, I was literally like, 'F--king perfect!'"
Maguire should know: he played Parker in three films between 2000 and 2007, with total grosses tallying just under $2.5 billion worldwide.
Garfield was cast as the lead in "Amazing Spider-Man" back on July 1, 2010, after a lengthy audition process that included such young Hollywood stars as Logan Lerman, Josh Hutcherson and Jamie Bell. While chatting with Maguire, Garfield addressed what he called "a weird kind of cattle call."
I'm friends with a few of the guys who were up for it, and I actually had dinner with Jamie [Bell] the night of my screen test and his screen test. We compared notes and war stories, and we kind of got past the ridiculousness of it all and thought it would be a nice idea to get everyone together and kind of interview each other about how messed up the process is, being against each other, and remember that we're all in it together, knowing that when you take off that bodysuit someone else is going to be stepping into your sweat immediately after.
Still, despite the casting rigmarole, Garfield said he's excited about starring as Spider-Man, a character he's been obsessed with since his youth. Last summer, Garfield snuck into Comic-Con to read a letter about his relationship with the friendly neighborhood webslinger, a portion of which you can check out below.
I needed Spidey in my life when I was a kid, and he gave me hope. In every comic I read, he was living out my and every skinny boy's fantasy of being stronger, of being free of the body I was born into, and that swinging sensation of flight. And upon receiving his power, unlike most who have become corrupted, he used it for good. And I think that we all wish we had the courage to stick up for ourselves more, to stick up for a loved one more, or even a stranger you see being mistreated, and Peter Parker has inspired me to feel stronger.
