Lawrence O'Donnell Praises Shep Smith's Gay Marriage Comments: 'On The Right Side Of History' (VIDEO)

WATCH: O'Donnell Praises Shep Smith

Lawrence O'Donnell paid tribute to Fox News' Shepard Smith on Wednesday, saying that Smith's pro-gay marriage comments placed him at odds with the rest of his network and "on the right side of history."

Smith startled media watchers with his candor on Wednesday. Just after President Obama announced that he was now in favor of same-sex marriage, Smith said that the president was "now in the 21st century." He went on to say that the GOP was on "the wrong side of history" and even appeared to go further than Obama by implying that the current, state-by-state nature of the marriage debate was akin to the Civil Rights movement before the federal equal protection laws of the 1960s were enacted.

O'Donnell contrasted Smith's comments with the network's Fox Nation site, which initially proclaimed that Obama had declared "war on marriage" before changing its headline. He implied that Smith's forceful comments had made the network change its line, saying that Smith has "frequently been the lone voice of reason" at Fox News.

"So now it's time to sit back and watch Fox News evolve on same-sex marriage," O'Donnell concluded, "and all they really need to do to find their way on this one is to follow Shepard Smith, the Fox News man, on the right side of history."
