The L.A. Times ran a story Thursday morning about Jason Sudeikis' future at "Saturday Night Live," and even with the premiere of the NBC sketch show only about a month away, the 9-year veteran has yet to officially confirm whether or not he'll return to the show.
Complicating matters is the fact that he plays GOP presidential contender Mitt Romney. The show does not commonly recast presidential candidates in the middle of election cycles.
Unlike past interviews, Sudeikis spoke openly about possibly staying on the show after all. Most recently, he alluded to a potential exit in Men's Journal. Now, he seems open to staying on -- but only if given a reason to stay.
He told The Times:
"It could be some sort of title change. The least of the concerns is anything financial. I'm not buying a boat because of writing skits. It's more having a desire to give more to a place I really believe in. To stay just for the juice of being in the public eye -- of being Mitt Romney -- is not enough."
As the end of the last season ramped up, it was widely rumored that Sudeikis would leave the show with fellow cast members Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg. But on the season finale, both Wiig and Samberg got a send-off, while Sudeikis' plans remained ambiguous both on the show and in the media.
In April, longtime "SNL" political comedy writer James Downey told Maureen Dowd of The New York Times that he thinks Sudeikis will stay at least through the election.
Sudeikis will next be seen on the big screen in "The Campaign," which opens this Friday.
