'Raiders Of The Lost Ark' IMAX Re-Release Planned For September

'Raiders Of The Lost Ark' Is Coming Back To Theaters

It's time for the return of the great adventure: "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is headed back to theaters for a limited run on IMAX screens.

Lucasfilm confirmed the re-release to the New York Times on Monday, after the website Screencrush reported that "Raiders" would screen for one week IMAX starting on Friday, Sept. 7. The move is being done to goose interest in the "Raiders of the Lost Ark" Blu-ray release on Sept. 18.

“For me, it’s always been the bigger the screen, the better,” director Steven Spielberg told Dave Itzkoff when discussing the IMAX release. “It’s the only marked contrast we have to the generations that are seeing our movies on phones and hand-held platforms. It’s a complete relief to be able to see a film that many people have just experienced on a palm-sized platform technology, suddenly hurled at that them on an IMAX-sized screen."

Spielberg said that only sound adjustments will be made to "Raiders of the Lost Ark," which jibes with what he told Moviefone late last year.

"I'm so busy looking ahead to all the movies I'm about to make, I can't even imagine looking back and wanting to go back to something that happened a long time ago," he said with a laugh when asked which of his films, if any, he would want to change. "I have no movies I'd like to re-do."

Of course, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" isn't the only Spielberg film headed back to theaters in the near future. "Jurassic Park" is getting a 3D re-release on July 19, 2013. As Spielberg said, it's the only one of his films he'd consider retrofitting into 3D.
