Lauren Burk's Murder At 18-Years Old By Dishonorably Discharged Military Man Told On 'Sins & Secrets' (VIDEO)

'Sins & Secrets' Tells Story Of 18-Year Old Student's Murder

The story of 18-year old Lauren Burk was told on the latest episode of "Sins & Secrets" (Sun., 9 p.m. ET on ID). She was studying art at Auburn University when her life was tragically cut short.

The victim of a carjacking, Burk was shot and killed when she tried to escape her abductor. It was a death that stunned her college community.

A multi-state manhunt finally led police to Courtney Lockhart, a man who was dishonorably discharged from the Army for assault. He then went on a crime spree, where Burk became a senseless victim.

He was sentenced to life in prison without parole for her murder, but a judge overruled the jury, sentencing Lockhart to death by lethal injection. According to local TV station WRBL, Lockhart's attorney is in the process of appealing that sentence.

"The appeals process could take up to 25 years, which is longer than 18-year-old Lauren Burk’s life," a journalist for the site wrote.

In Lauren Burk's memory, Auburn University has established a scholarship for students majoring in her chosen program of art.

True stories of tragic crimes unfold every week on "Sins & Secrets," Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on ID.
