Residents of the Gulf Coast hunkered down Tuesday as Hurricane Isaac, formerly known as Tropical Storm Isaac, barreled toward New Orleans. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami declared Isaac a Category 1 hurricane Tuesday with winds of 75 mph -- they could be even stronger by the time Isaac reaches the coast.

Hurricane Isaac landfall is forecast in southeast Louisiana on Tuesday night or early Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.

As of early Tuesday afternoon,Hurricane Isaac was moving northwest at 10 mph, expected to slow further, forecasters said, giving it time to wreak havoc in some areas. Total rainfall could be 14 inches in many places, with some isolated areas getting as much as 20 inches, CNN reported.

President Obama declared a state of emergency in Louisiana yesterday, taking no chances on the seventh anniversary of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina. On Tuesday, he told Gulf Coast residents to prepare for Hurricane Isaac, warning, "Now's not the time to tempt fate."
