Two Hundred Inmates Brawl At State Prison

TUCSON, Ariz., Sept 20 (Reuters) - A fight between around 200 prisoners at an Arizona state prison on Thursday left several inmates and one guard injured and forced a lockdown, authorities said.

The brawl involving around 200 Hispanic and African-American inmates erupted at the Santa Rita Unit of the Arizona State Prison Complex in Tucson at around 5:30 p.m., the Arizona Department of Corrections said in a news release.

Officers secured the yard without the use of force about half an hour later.

The prison complex, which has 5,150 beds, was placed on lockdown, while the Santa Rita Unit, with 768 beds, will remain locked down for several days while the incident is investigated. (Reporting by Tim Gaynor; Editing by John Stonestreet)
