She may be part of the "Avengers" universe thanks to the short film "Item 47," but Lizzy Caplan won't be in Joss Whedon's "S.H.I.E.L.D." TV series ... at least full-time.

"I have my own show so I will not be a regular on the Marvel 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' show," she told ComingSoon.Net. "But I'm glad people are so excited about that. I think it's a good idea ... Maybe I could do some little thing."

Both Caplan and "Guys With Kids" star Jesse Bradford starred in a short film that will be included in the "Avengers" DVD/Blu-ray release. Caplan can next be seen on the small screen in Showtime's "Masters of Sex," co-starring opposite Michael Sheen as real-life pioneers of human sexuality, Virginia Johnson and William Masters.

Whedon, who wrote and directed "The Avengers," will co-write the pilot for ABC's "S.H.I.E.L.D." series alongside the project with his brother Jed Whedon and Jed's wife Maurissa Tancharoen. If timing works out, he'll direct the pilot, which will feature some new characters.

"It needs to be its own thing," Whedon said. "It needs to be adjacent [to the MCU] but you don't want to do a show where you're constantly going, 'Iron Man just left, but he was totally here a minute ago.'"
