Congratulations, Matt Wieters.

The Baltimore Orioles' All-Star catcher's wife, Maria, gave birth to a baby boy early Friday morning, as first reported by the team's official Twitter account.

Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com later tweeted that Maverick Wieters was born at 5:11 a.m. and weights eight pounds and two ounces.

The team had hoped Maria would give birth to Maverick on Thursday, the Orioles' last off day during the regular season, to keep Wieters in the lineup. But it didn't work out that way and the team's catcher will not be in the lineup on Friday night for the first of a three-game series at Camden Yards.

Backup catcher Taylor Teagarden will start.

Maverick may not be among Nameberry's "Hottest Baby Names Of 2012 (So Far)" but Orioles skipper Buck Showalter seems to think that this handle will lead to big things -- and a big boy.

Born the same year as Top Gun was released (1986), Wieters' choice may be inspired by Tom Cruise's devil-may-care character. If the couple's second son is named Goose then we'll know for sure.
