Smithsonian's Museum Day Means Free Admission For All (PHOTOS)

PHOTOS: 'Museum Day' Means Free Admission

On Saturday, museums across America will adopt the Smithsonian Insitution's free admission policy for 24 hours, allowing visitors to enjoy their collections gratis as part of Smithsonian Magazine's annual Museum Day. According to its organizers, the event, designed to allow better access to our cultural treasures, allowed 350,000 museum-goers to visit more than 1,400 museums last year alone.

The museums participating this year run the gamut from the well known, like New York's Brooklyn Museum, to the obscure, like North Dakota's Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile State Historic Site. The process of getting free entry, though, is the same for every participating institution. Head to the Museum Day website and download Museum Day Live! tickets. Two are available for every household.

In honor of this annual bash, here are a few suggestions for those new to museum-going. These participating museums are sure to surprise you with the depth of their collections and the cleverness of their curation. A day a year is just too little to spend in museums.
