Metra Train, Minivan Collide In Morgan Park: Woman Killed, 2 Children Hurt In Crash

Woman Killed, Kids Injured In Metra Train, Minivan Collision

One woman was killed and her two children critically injured when the driver of a minivan attempted to beat an approaching Metra train by driving around the train gates between the track and the road on Chicago's South Side.

According to a Metra spokesman, the driver -- who died on the scene of the crash -- collided with the northbound Rock Island train around 8:10 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of 115th and Vincennes in the city's Morgan Park neighborhood, NBC Chicago reports.

The deceased driver was identified later Tuesday by the Chicago Tribune as 26-year-old Tristian Hicks Williams.

The express train was traveling at full speed and was not able to slow down to avoid the collision, according to ABC Chicago.

The two sons -- who appeared to be ages 5 and 7 and, according to the Tribune, are the driver's sons -- were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

A preliminary investigation indicates that Metra's gates and lights were operating at the time of the crash but a review of available information is ongoing.
