Kate Middleton Goes Rogue In Boho Temperley Dress At London Olympics Reception (PHOTOS, POLL)

Who saw that coming?

We can say a lot of things about Kate Middleton's style: that she's posh, or iconic, or even (gasp!) a bit bland.

But after seeing Catherine's latest outfit, we have something to note about Kate's style that rarely comes to mind: adventurous.

The last time we saw the Duchess of Cambridge, she was hobnobbing with England's football team in a green coat dress -- obviously the standardest of Kate wear. After all, the duties of a duchess don't really leave much room for experimenting with fashion trends. What is she going to do, wear a bandage mini in front of the queen?

But for a Buckingham Palace reception on Tuesday for the UK's Olympics and Paralympics winners, Catherine went a little rogue, opting for a bespoke Temperley frock that the company transformed from a staid LBD into a hippie-ish -- and sheer! -- floral frock.

Catherine, flanked by the queen and Prince Phillip, greeted guests in the Alice by Temperley Esmeralda pleated chiffon and lace dress, still available at writing time on the Outnet for $292. For the duchess, the dress had its neckline, sleeves and hem replaced with a sheer floral panel. Paired with it? Her fave Jimmy Choo pumps and her diamond bracelet.

The rest of the evening had some other royal socializing, as Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, attended the premiere of "Skyfall" and chatted up stars Judi Dench and Daniel Craig.

Of course, this isn't the first time Kate has channeled Woodstock -- green Mulberry peace sign dress, anyone?

Scope out Kate's creative frock below and tell us -- should she do this more often?
