It’s hard to believe that the 2012 Latin Grammys are just 10 days away. And this year promises a ton of old school talent along with some fresh faces. One newly nominated band that’s getting a lot of press is Venezuela’s Los Mesoneros. The group is up for multiple awards this year and lead singer Luis Jiménez told us about all of the excitement they’re feeling leading up to the show.

“It’s amazing, there are no words to describe the feeling,” Jiménez explained in our exclusive interview. “We’re an independent band, so seeing this kind of recognition is really overwhelming.”

Los Mesoneros earned nominations for Best New Artist, Best Rock Album and Best Rock Song -- all for the work on their album "Indeleble." Luis told us he was amazed at how much praise their first international record received.

“We worked very hard on 'Indeleble,' then we put it online for free,” he said. “From there, it took off and tons of people started downloading it.”

Critics seemed impressed with "Indeleble" too, praising Mesoneros’ rock edge and the depth of tracks like "Indeleble" and “Un Segundo.” Jiménez told us that the record took over of a year to produce. He also explained the work that went each and every lyric on the album. (Watch "Un Segundo" Above)

“I’m the main composer for Los Mesoneros,” he added. “As the lead singer, I have to feel comfortable with the words in the song. So that’s why I write most of the lyrics.”

Indeed, Luis is up for his own solo Latin Grammy as a songwriter for “Indeleble.” But that doesn’t mean the group isn’t close. Jiménez told us that he and his four bandmates have been friends since childhood and started Los Mesoneros as a high school band.

“We’ve all known each other since we were 7 years old,” he said. “So we were kind of like a high school band and then we just kept going.”

And now there’s no telling how far Los Mesoneros will go. Look for them to make their American TV debut at the Latin Grammys on November 15.
