Martin Heinrich Faces Heather Wilson In New Mexico Senate Election

Martin Heinrich Up Against Heather Wilson In New Mexico Senate Election

Another Democratic Senate retirement, another open seat opportunity. This time it’s six-term senator and Democratic Party veteran Jeff Bingaman quitting the stage, setting up a battle between former Rep. Heather Wilson, the GOP nominee, and Martin Heinrich, who replaced Wilson after she vacated her seat to run for the Senate in 2008, only to lose in her party’s primary.

This Senate race has attracted some of the key figures in both candidates’ parties to stump on their behalf, with Sen. Marco Rubio supporting Wilson and Sen. John Kerry giving support to Heinrich. It’s been ground zero for a festival of "dark money" donors as well. Despite the financial assistance of organizations like the Karl Rove-backed super PAC American Crossroads, the campaign has proven to be a tough slog for Wilson, who has consistently trailed in the polls.

As of this writing, Heinrich enjoys a 50.3 to 42.5 percent lead in the HuffPost Pollster model.
