Sheryl Crow's 'Woman In The White House' Says Ladies Belong In The Oval Office (VIDEO)

We don't know yet whether Barack Obama or Mitt Romney will be in the White House come 2013, but one thing is for sure -- whoever wins, it won't be a woman. Now there's a song to remind us of that fact.

In a new tune called "Woman In The White House," singer Sheryl Crow asks if we aren't long overdue for a female president.

"Don't you think it's time to put a woman in the White House?" she croons at the start of her new ballad. "With a whole new attitude / We could use a little female common sense / Down on Pennsylvania Avenue."

There's no denying that women are woefully underrepresented in the United States government, and not just in the executive branch. Women currently make up just 17 percent of Congress and one-third of the Supreme Court. "Woman In The White House" suggests that more women in government would mean better governance.

So far responses to Crow's new song are mixed. Country singer Brad Paisley seemed pretty excited about it, tweeting:

However, Slate's Amanda Marcotte argued that Crow's lyrics show "regressive reasoning" about why women should have parity with men in government:

Most of Crow's case rests on the idea that home economics are the same things as national budgets, and that women are inherently less corrupt than their male counterparts ... It's a call for a mom-in-chief, with the promise that she won't stop dressing sexy once she gets her hands on more power than is currently available to her at school-board meetings.

Crow publicly endorsed Barack Obama in 2008, and this year she appeared in one of the President's campaign ads alongside Kerry Washington and Beyonce. "When I hear [Obama] speak about his girls, I know that what he's thinking of is not just the future of this country, but the future of all young women," she said.
