With '100,000 Stars,' Google Just Started Mapping The Galaxy

Google Just Started Mapping The Galaxy

After updating Google Mars last week, Google wasted no time staying ahead of Apple in the "maps wars" and unveiled a new 3D rendering of the stars in our galactic neighborhood.

OK, so "100,000 Stars," a project of Google's Chrome Experiments team that runs in the company's web browser,, will not break Apple. But it is a great way to waste an hour zooming around the cluster of stars around our own Solar System. Google says 87 stars are individually labelled; clicking on one lets you zoom in for a description and artist's depiction of the star. All the while, errie music from composer Sam Hulick, who scored the video game "Mass Effect," hums in the emptiness of space.

"Scientific accuracy is not guaranteed," Google warns, as the data is from Wikipedia. "Please do not use this visualization for interstellar navigation."

You can only do this project justice by checking it out here.
