Consequences For Hampden-Sydney Students After Obama Protest

Five students at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia are being sanctioned after they threw bottles and yelled racist slurs on campus on election night, after President Obama was reelected. The students could face punishments as serious as expulsion for violations of the school's code of conduct, the Associated Press reports.

The five students were targeted out of a group of 40 who participated in the incident at the at the school's Minority Student Union on Nov. 6.

At the time, the president of the college, Chris Howard, said he was disappointed with the "harmful, senseless episode."

The Hampden-Sydney students were not alone in their negative, on-campus response to Obama's reelection. The election night results drew 400 protestors at the University of Mississippi, with some shouting racial slurs. After the incident, Ole Miss students recently gathered in a candle-light vigil to encourage racial harmony.
