Transgender Artists You Should Know: A Roundup In Honor Of The Day Of Remembrance (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Transgender Artists You Should Know

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance, honoring those who died as a result of anti-transgender violence. Since its inception in 1998, the Day of Remembrance has grown from a personal memorial project to an international day of action.

In honor of the date we're celebrating our favorite transgender and gender variant artists, who also function as activists, storytellers, icons and historians through their innovative work. Some have physically transformed their gender or sex, and others choose to live outside gender definitions completely. Some create artwork rooted in their personal struggles, while others turn their lens on areas like immigration or ecological awareness.

We rounded up some of our favorite transgender artists, including musicians, theorists, performers, photographers and new media engineers. Through bravery, humor, and relentless creativity, these artists serve as an inspiration to all of us, no matter our background or place on the gender spectrum.

Check out the following transgender artists and let us know who we missed in the comments section. For more inspiration, see "50 Transgender Icons" over on Gay Voices.
