A Slidell couple who expected to receive $1,000 from a winning lottery ticket was shocked to learn their check would be for $1 million instead.

David and Joyce Hebert of Slidell, La., missed cashing in on the record $550-million Powerball jackpot on November 28, reported WWLTV, but they still managed to go home with $700,000 after taxes.

The day after the drawing, David Hebert told WDSU that he hadn't won anything in the lottery.

"I bought one the other day, but mine didn't even come close," he told the news station. "Not one number."

Luckily for him, his wife's ticket ended up being a winner. Joyce Hebert matched all five numbers in the November drawing, missing only the Powerball number.

"I thought I only won $1,000," Joyce Hebert told KATC.

On Wednesday, she joined her husband at the lottery headquarters in Baton Rouge to collect the prize. That's when they found out they'd won a million dollars instead.

"I tried not to get emotional," David Hebert said as he wiped away tears.

The couple's grandchildren are urging them to spend the money on a new boat.
