High School Senior Urges Colleges: Market Less, Give More | Boston Globe

Hey Colleges: Less Marketing, More Financial Aid Please

As a high school senior currently applying to college, I send each school to which I am applying only one application. Simultaneously, I receive a bombardment of countless letters, brochures, booklets, and magazines, through the mail and e-mail, from these schools and others in which I have no interest, informing me of their supposed interest in my academic record and of countless reasons why I should consider sending them an application.

In light of record high student loan debt (“Consumer debt rises to $2.75 trillion,” Business, Dec. 8), I urge colleges to reconsider the merit of these expensive mailings to students across the country, and to reallocate these funds where they can be better used — most importantly, in the form of financial aid for students who will be in debt for years to come.
