“Let me tell you about the very rich,” wrote F. Scott Fitzgerald in his short story The Rich Boy in 1926. “They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them…”

Fitzgerald, consummate chronicler of the haves and have mores, was onto something.

Covering the billionaire beat for Forbes, I see again and again the consequences of extreme wealth on a person’s behavior.

Of course, not every member of the Forbes World’s Billionaires List is, say, facing allegations of sexually abusing his stepdaughter or staring down his supermodel ex in court over child support.

But for every story of ingenious invention or philanthropic largesse, there’s one of excess and corruption.
