Though it has seemed like the end is in sight for "Community" after a year of behind-the-scenes tumult, the NBC comedy could still have a future.
At the 2013 Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt said "Community" could "absolutely" see a Season 5, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Community" has been a cult favorite since its inception, but far from a ratings juggernaut for NBC. Still, Greenblatt could save Greendale. The NBC exec told THR, "I'm always hopeful for a show to continue. We co-own it and I'd love nothing more than to see it continue."
Over the course of the past year, "Community's" behind-the-scenes drama between series creator Dan Harmon and Chase made headlines, Harmon was ousted as showrunner and the show was moved from its Thursday timeslot to Fridays. Then, NBC announced it was holding "Community" until February where it will replace "30 Rock" after the Tina Fey comedy ends its seven-year run.
Soon thereafter, in late November 2012, news broke that Chevy Chase was exiting "Community" after four years -- and countless incidents of bashing his own show -- with a few episodes left to shoot on Season 4. However, Chase will appear in the Season 4 finale because it was shot out of order.
As for what viewers would see in this new post-Harmon era of "Community" in Season 4, Greenblatt told THR, "I think you're going to see relatively the same show that you have seen before ... There is a little bit more heart built in to it, but we didn't fundamentally change it."
"Community" Season 4 premieres Thursday, February 7 at 8 p.m. EST.
