Michigan Marijuana Activists Plan More Local Initiatives, Eye Statewide Decriminalization

'Cannabis Will Be Legal By 2016'

LANSING, MI -- Michigan activists looking to decriminalize marijuana got on a roll at the tail end of 2012, scoring a series of municipal ballot box victories that has set the stage for additional local initiatives and spurred talk of another statewide push.

Voters in Detroit, Grand Rapids, Flint and Ypsilanti in November approved separate proposals to decriminalize adult possession or de-emphasize enforcement, and the Kalamazoo City Commission in October adopted an ordinance making it a misdemeanor offense, punishable by a ticket rather than arrest.
