'The Purpose Driven Life' Pastor Rick Warren Gives Love Advice (VIDEO)

WATCH: The Relationship Sin We All Commit

In an upcoming episode of "Oprah's Lifeclass," Pastor Rick Warren, author of the bestselling book The Purpose Driven Life, tells Oprah and the audience that people often come to "feel trapped" in relationships -- and explains why some spouses may need to just back off.

Pastor Rick says that one partner always needs the relationship more than the other at any given time. When the person who needs it less starts backing out, the other person's typical reaction is to get scared and move in closer, he explains.

But that's not the approach he suggests when it comes to fixing things.

"The first thing you have to do is, you have to back off and not hold on so tight," Warren says in this clip. "You couldn't make him or her love you; you can't make them stay in love with you."

Warren describes this common relationship occurrence. "When you back off, this person over here is going to turn around and go, 'Hmm, all of a sudden I don’t feel trapped anymore,'" he says. "And then they go, 'Maybe you don’t know what you've got until it’s gone.'"
