Since working on the 2005 Sundance Film Festival hit A Thousand Roads, directed by Chris Eyre, Chilean cinematographer and inventive lighting guru Claudio Miranda has propelled himself from a relatively unknown gaffer—an electrician on a film set in charge of lighting—to one of the world’s foremost cinematographers.

Miranda rose to prominence after working as a cinematographer with Hollywood heavyweight David Fincher on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, for which he received an Academy Award nomination in cinematography.

Ahead of Benjamin Button’s release, Variety magazine named Miranda one of its 2008 “10 Cinematographers to Watch.”

Miranda has also worked on the movies Se7en, Fight Club, TRON: Legacy, and just finished working on the upcoming science fiction action thriller Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise.

The biggest news for Claudio Miranda this year is his involvement in Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, for which the Chilean cinematographer has earned his second Academy Award nomination and is considered a frontrunner to win. Life of Pi has been nominated for a total of 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Directing.

In Life of Pi, a young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor…a fearsome Bengal tiger. The film was directed by Academy Award winner Ang Lee and stars Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, and Adil Hussain.

In addition to his widely celebrated work in films, Miranda has also created memorable and award-winning images for big-name products and music stars, including Heineken, the Backstreet Boys, and Absolut Vodka.

To find out if Claudio Miranda will nab the Oscar, tune in to ABC on February 24, at 7 p.m. eastern time.
