Winter Storm Khan Could Bring Snowy, Icy Wrath To Tennessee, Kentucky, Virgina, Carolinas (VIDEO)

The Wrath Of Winter Storm Khan

The Weather Channel has named a winter storm system moving through southeast and mid-Atlantic states on Friday "Khan."

While the name will undoubtedly draw attention due to its parallel with the Star Trek franchise film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," the storm isn't to be taken lightly.

The National Weather Service forecast predicts that winter storm Khan will move into the Northeast from the lower Mississippi valley on Friday, leading to treacherous road conditions and complicated commutes. Ice storm warnings have been issued for southern Kentucky and eastern Tennessee, and winter weather advisories spanned at least 12 states from Indiana to New Jersey as of Friday morning. Freezing rain advisories were also issued for northern Georgia.

According to the Weather Channel, ice accumulations from winter storm Khan "may lead to power outages in addition to major travel issues." Up to half an inch of ice accumulation is expected, as well as two to four inches of snow from Ohio through the mid-Atlantic region, including Washington, D.C.

In October 2012, the Weather Channel announced that it would adopt a naming convention for winter storms similar to what the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration uses for hurricanes.

A list of potential winter storm names -- many of them rather colorful (Gandalf, Xerxes, Q, Zeus) -- was released by TWC in November. The Weather Channel said naming storms could help raise awareness in advance of hazardous conditions.

In 2012, the National Weather Service issued a statement saying it does not name winter storms.
