'Cougar Town': Jules Faces Mortality, Show Adopts A Darker Tone (VIDEO)

'Cougar Town': Jules Faces Mortality

While "Cougar Town" usually dances in the realm of farcical and silly, things took a more serious turn this week. Sure, there were still plenty of laughs and gags, but the return of Jules' father brought with it something else she wasn't ready to deal with. Chick isn't getting any younger, and some day she's going to have to figure out how to go on without him.

But he's not the kind of guy who's used to allowing people to take care of him. So Jules had to force the issue. "You have done everything for me, so I’m gonna do the same for you whether you like it or not," she said.

"What if, someday, I’m not me anymore?" Chick asked, revealing his own fears about growing older.

"Maybe you won’t complain so much," Jules retorted.

TV Fanatic felt the darker tone was "unexpected," but found the storyline relatable. This is, after all, a show about life and love during middle age. The A.V. Club was on board with the more serious tone as well, writing, "We’re entering some new territory for the show, and it will be fascinating to watch it unfold."

Keep hanging with the cul-de-sac crew on "Cougar Town" every Tuesday at 10 p.m. EST on TBS.
