When we last left our favorite blood-suckers on "The Vampire Diaries," Damon (Ian Somerhalder) had told Elena (Nina Dobrev) to turn off her emotions and then, she burned down the Gilbert house ... with her brother Jeremy's (Steven R. McQueen) body inside.
When "The Vampire Diaries" returns (Thursday, March 14 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW), the all-new Elena goes back to high school, per Damon and Stefan's (Paul Wesley) suggestion. But is there still hope for Damon and Elena, and what kind of havoc is Silas/Shane (David Alpay) is about to wreak on Mystic Falls?
Ian Somerhalder spoke to The Huffington Post about that and much more, including why "The Vampire Diaries" cast members are worried about who's going to die next.
Is everyone going to be upset with Damon for telling Elena to "turn it off"?
Well, I think it backfired. I think that ultimately Damon did it because he knew it would be effective, [but] I don't think he thought it through. So it’s a tragic kind of situation where you have this guy who finally got the girl he loves, even though it’s major robbage of the cradle: 170 and 18? That’s a significant age difference. But now it’s kind of tragic in the sense that he really had her and then you finally realize that it was manufactured because of this whole sire bond thing.
I talked to the guy that did that movie "Catfish" and I realized, I had no idea that there’s this whole thing happening in the world right now where people are presenting themselves in fake profiles and having relationships with people and then in the end, find out it’s not true ... it’s devastating! Like half the world.
With Elena's emotions shut off, is her sire bond to Damon gone since that's emotionally based?
Yeah. I think it was the mythology that we were using, which is yeah, it was emotionally based. So now that that is gone, Damon kind of shot himself in the foot. But he really did relieve Elena of an exceptional amount of pain. So he won in one department, lost in another. You win some, you lose some. There’s a cost-benefit analysis to all of it, you know what I mean?
It was nice to see Damon come to Bonnie's (Kat Graham) aid, but she seems to have completely lost it. What can you tease about how Shane/Silas will affect things in Mystic Falls?
Well, it screws a lot of stuff up, to be honest with you. It screws a lot of stuff up. There’s a lot of actors on set who are very on their toes, you know what I mean? Making sure they show up on time, making sure they know all their lines, making sure that that they’re doing the right thing because this dude can take anybody out and any time.
