Charlton Porter Caught In Lobby Of School With Gun And 34 Bullets In High-Capacity Magazine

File this one under "close calls."

A 17-year-old on his way into a New Orleans high school was caught with a gun loaded with 34 bullets in a high-capacity magazine, according to court documents and a report on New Orleans news site NOLA.com.

Two security officers stopped Charlton Porter in the school's lobby after they noticed a bulge in the waistband of his pants, the court documents say.

The officers gave Porter a pat-down and found a 9mm Ruger handgun and an extended magazine with live ammo. The gun turned out to be stolen, and Porter was booked on three charges with bail set at $50,000, NOLA reports.

An assault-weapons bill introduced in January by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) would ban high-capacity magazines in the U.S. The bill was introduced after the December shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, where the killer was said by authorities to have used several 30-round clips to fatally shoot more than two dozen people.

High-capacity magazines were also used by Jared Lee Loughner, who is said to have used a 33-round clip in the shooting that killed six people in Tucson, Ariz., in 2011, and by by James Holmes, who is accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 in a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., in July 2012.

Although the assault-weapons bill was passed on Thursday by the Senate Judiciary Committee, it's unlikely it will pass the full Senate.
