'Enlightened' Canceled By HBO After Two Seasons

"Enlightened" has been canceled.

The HBO has given the critically-acclaimed comedy from Laura Dern and Mike White the axe after just two seasons.

"It was a very difficult decision," HBO said in a statement. "We've decided not to continue 'Enlightened' for a third season. We're proud of the show and we look forward to working with Mike White and Laura Dern in the future."

Patton Oswalt, an obvious fans of the series, tweeted his pleas for Netflix to pull an "Arrested Development" with the now-canceled "Enlightened."

The Huffington Post's Maureen Ryan is among the many TV critics who have lauded the series. Just days before "Enlightened" was canceled, she wrote: "Aesthetically and narratively, 'Enlightened' is doing something distinctive, important and new, and people come to HBO for that kind of risk-taking. Without shows like this, HBO runs the risk of seeming, frankly, a bit stodgy and predictable."

Mike White spoke frankly with Ryan about the fate of the series in February:

"Right now we’re struggling for our lives and honestly our success sometimes is [in doubt]. The reason we came back had a lot to do with the really beautiful things that some of the critics had said [in Season 1], and that’s meaningful to HBO ... Even if the numbers aren’t huge, it’s worth doing ... The truth is, HBO really should be applauded, because the kinds of risks that a show like 'Enlightened' or 'Girls; are taking are actual risks ... They’re risks in tone. They’re risks in content."
