Beloved Britpop girl group called it quits after the final show on their U.K. tour, saying they hope to keep inspiring fans after their breakup.

Cheryl Cole, Sarah Harding, Kimberley Walsh, Nicola Roberts and Nadine Coyle announced the split in a statement posted on Twitter:

Dear Alouders, we just want to say from the bottom of our hearts Thank you!! This tour has been an amazing experience and the perfect chance to say thank you for being on this journey with us through a decade. It has far exceeded any of our dreams and we hope we are forever your inspiration and reminder that dreams really do glitter!! Your love and support will stay with us forever but we have now come to the end of our incredible time together . Love you lots.

As NME notes, rumors that the group was hanging up their glittery microphones had persisted for some time.

Despite being the product of a reality-TV show, each of Girls Aloud's five albums reached platinum status. In 2011, the group was estimated to be worth $45 million and are the best-selling girl group in the period beginning with the dawn of the millenium running up to today.

All of which is to say, what's up with that Spice Girls reunion?
