How Prop 8, DOMA Arguments Could Impact This Same-Sex Binational Couple

As the Supreme Court gears up to hear arguments involving both California's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) this week, a number of high-profile lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights advocates are speaking out.

Judy Rickard, author of Torn Apart: United by Love, Divided by Law, appeared on HuffPost Live to chat about the impact the cases may or may not have on her life with her wife Karin. Together, they are a same-sex, binational couple.

"We can't afford to be here," Rickard said. "I had to choose between my wife and my career, so I took earlier retirement...we have less money, we have more expenses."
