Tom Cruise: Katie Holmes Divorce Was A Surprise (UPDATE)

Tom Cruise Admits Divorce From Katie Holmes Was A Shock

UPDATE: According to Tom Cruise's rep, Cruise never spoke about his divorce on German television. As it turns out, a German tabloid fabricated the quotes (Cruise supposedly said he was shocked when Katie Holmes filed for divorce) and those then circulated the web. "The entire interview was about his career. He was not asked any personal questions," said Cruise's rep, according to The Inquisitr.

After months of speculation, Tom Cruise has revealed that his divorce from Katie Holmes was a complete shock to him.

According to E! News, in a sit-down interview with German TV network ProSieben (via Germany's Bunte magazine), the 50-year-old actor admits that he was unaware that his wife of five years wanted a divorce.

"I did not expect that," Cruise said, insinuating that he was taken aback by Holmes' decision to end their marriage in June 2012. The "Oblivion" star explained that he had "an incredible amount of time to reflect" following the split and that he came to terms with Holmes' decision.

"Life is a challenge," he admitted, saying that the breakup sort of messed with his milestone birthday celebrations. (Cruise turned 50 five days after Holmes announced the couple's separation).

"To be 50 and have experiences and think you have everything under control, and then it hits you -- that's what life is…Life is tragicomic," Cruise added. "You need a certain sense of humor."

Since the divorce, the newly single Cruise has thrust himself into work, living abroad as he shoots action flicks, including "All You Need Is Kill," in London. Holmes, 34, is now a permanent resident of New York City, where she lives with the pair's almost 7-year-old daughter, Suri.
