This week on "The Vampire Diaries," the Salvatore brothers were pulling out all the stops to try and get Elena to feel anything, which would turn her humanity back on. They even brought Katherine in, but that backfired when she set Elena loose. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and so Damon reverted back to the cold-heartred prick he can be.
Elena had found an fed on Matt and was ready to do so again when Damon and Stefan caught up to her. Damon decided that maybe killing her friend right in front of her would bring her back, and so he abruptly and coldly snapped Matt's neck.
The gambit worked as Elena collapsed on the ground and felt the flood of emotions that signaled her humanity had returned. Luckily for Matt -- and Damon probably -- he was wearing a protection ring, so he came back to life. It was all an orchestrated plan that ultimately worked.
Only two episodes remain this season on "The Vampire Diaries," Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
