A college student and former star athlete -- in three sports -- when he was a student at Proviso East High School died Thursday after being shot in the head in west suburban Maywood.

Dashamone McCarty, 19, was shot while riding in a car with three other people around 10:55 p.m. Wednesday near 4th Avenue and Fillmore in Maywood, according to NBC Chicago.

McCarty was taken to Loyola Hospital by the driver of the car and died just after 9 a.m. Thursday. He was the only one in the car who was wounded in the shooting.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, McCarty -- who also went by Deshawn McCarthy on his Facebook and Twitter pages -- had only been back in his hometown for a week after completing his first year of college at the time of his death.

McCarty had played football, basketball and track at Proviso East, where he graduated last year, and went by the nickname "Spuddy." Scottie Ware, who coached the man in all three of those sports, told the Sun-Times McCarty was "the one we looked to to calm the team down or get them going. He was an extension of the coaching staff.”

Ryan Jones, a childhood friend of McCarty's, described him to CBS Chicago as "just a great person. If he had a dollar, he’s split it with you, a kind person.”

Police reportedly have no suspects and told ABC Chicago they were unsure if McCarty was the intended target in the shooting.
