Rules Of Thumb To Traveling Safely, From Seth Kugel (VIDEO)

How can you gauge whether a travel destination is safe for American tourists? Frugal Traveler columnist for The New York Times Seth Kugel gave me some suggestions for determining the safety of your vacation spot when he joined me on Mondays With Marlo. First, Seth suggested looking at the U.S. State Department's warnings for the country you're thinking of traveling to. But because these warnings are often exaggerated, he advised looking at the British and Australian warnings for comparison.

You should also figure out where you want to travel within in a country, and where the danger lies. There can be safe cities within countries that have volatile areas. The bottom line -- do your research!
