The New York Hotel and Motel Trades Council, one of the city’s most politically potent unions, plans to spend as much as $2 million on television, radio and mail to back its preferred candidate in the mayoral race: Christine C. Quinn.

The union is set to endorse Ms. Quinn, and make its financial pledge, on Thursday, according to people familiar with the union’s plans.
