Dori Rhoades Accidentally Gives Away $18,000 Diamond Earrings At Garage Sale

Mom Accidentally Gives Away $18,000 Diamond Earrings At Garage Sale

Some people discover hidden gems; other people lose them. Unfortunately for Dori Rhoades, she recently found herself in the latter camp.

The 38-year-old from Huntington Beach, Calif., last month sold a denim jacket for $20 at a garage sale. Simple enough, right? Wrong. Inside the pocket of that jacket was a pair of $18,000 diamond earrings, according to CBS Los Angeles. By the time Rhoades figured that out, it was too late.

But wait! It gets worse. Also inside the jacket was a ring that her husband gave to her and $1,500 that she had been saving for a vacation, CBS Los Angeles reports.

"I’ve just been beating myself up,” Rhoades told CBS, explaining that she is a busy mother with two children who simply forgot the items were in the jacket.

“I volunteer in my kids’ classrooms multiple times a week, I work full time, I think anyone who is a mother knows," she added. "You give so much of yourself that sometimes your brain stops working."

Rhoades hopes that whoever bought the jacket will see the story and hopefully return the items to her, according to CBS Los Angeles. Here's to hoping.
