'Sharknado' Sequel: Tara Reid Is Up For It And Syfy Is Eying A Follow-Up (VIDEO)

Tara Reid & Ian Ziering Are Game For A 'Sharknado' Sequel

Deadline reports that the cable channel is looking to follow-up the movie, which stars "American Pie" alumna Tara Reid and "90210's" Ian Ziering as survivors of a tornado that lifted sharks out of the ocean and deposited them all over LA, with a "Sharknado 2." A spokesperson for Syfy told The Huffington Post, "There is no official decision on 'Sharknado 2'," but he did urge everyone to "stay tuned :)" for news.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Thomas Vitale, the executive vice president of programming and original movies at Syfy, was asked about a "Sharknado" sequel. "The truth is that this has all happened so quickly. It’s been such a whirlwind day. We’ve had a lot of meetings, emails. I’m not being coy, [but] that’s obviously being talked about," he said. "There may be some kind of announcement coming forth but there’s nothing going to be announced now just because we haven’t had real discussions with the real people we have to talk to about that."

If a "Sharknado" sequel does get the green light, Reid told TMZ she's up for it. "Why not?" she said. "[The movie] was so ridiculous, you know? Like it's almost so bad that it's good ... I'm just so glad that people saw the humor in it that I did. It's just hilarious."

Ziering also told HuffPost Live that he is "definitely down" for a "Sharknado" sequel. (Watch the interview above.)

Former "Lost" showrunner Damon Lindelof, who was live-tweeting "Sharknado" on Thursday night, joked that he'd like to write the "Sharknado" sequel.

Despite that not-so-promising response from a Syfy exec, Lindelof continued:

For those of you already maligning my ending for SHARKNADO 2, you should know 3 things: Henry Winkler. Leather jacket. Water skiis.

On Friday, Vitale told THR that he enjoyed Lindelof's tweets. "His stuff was hilarious. He was joking about starting to write a sequel before the movie was over and I think one of his best tweets was 'Sharknado: Such a rip-off of Bicycle Thief,'" he said.

"Sharknado" broke social records for Syfy, reaching 5,000 tweets per minute as its peak. But even though the camptastic made-for-TV movie clearly won the World Wide Web on Thursday night, it didn't do great in the ratings: "Sharknado" came in at about 1.4 million viewers and had a .4 rating among adults under 50. Still, the buzz alone seems like enough to warrant a "Sharknado" sequel and Syfy is clearly enthusiastic.

“Given the enormous popular demand, Syfy will present a special encore presentation of 'Sharknado' on Thursday, July 18,” Syfy proudly announced this morning in a release about the movie's social success.

"Sharknado" will air again on Thursday, July 18 at 7 p.m. ET on Syfy.
