'Ray Donovan' Renewed For Season 2 On Showtime

'Ray Donovan' Renewed For Season 2

Showtime's decision to pick up the freshman drama for a second season comes as no surprise. In its first few episodes, "Ray Donovan" has been breaking ratings records for the premium cable network: Its series premiere was Showtime's highest-rated series debut ever, averaging 1.35 million viewers during its initial airing. (That's 25 percent higher than Showtime darling "Homeland's" 2011 series premiere, The Hollywood Reporter notes.)

It's also Showtime's first freshman program to improve on its series premiere in its second week, reaching an impressive 1.56 million in its first Episode 2 airing. In its third week, "Ray Donovan" came in on par with its record-setting second week, according to Showtime.

"'Ray Donovan' is on track to be our biggest season one show ever," David Nevins, Showtime's president of entertainment, said in a statement. "Ann Biderman and the extraordinarily talented creative team, coupled with the brilliant ensemble cast led by Liev Schreiber, have produced one of the hottest new dramas of the year. We are proud and excited to pick up another season."

"Ray Donovan" stars Liev Schreiber as the titular LA fixer for a powerful law firm to the stars, who has some problems of his own when his father (Jon Voight) is unexpectedly released from prison.

"Ray Donovan" airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on Showtime.
