Alison Lundergan Grimes, McConnell Senate Opponent, Releases First Campaign Video

McConnell's Dem Opponent Bites Back

Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes (D) announced her 2014 senatorial campaign kick off Thursday, releasing her first campaign video.

Grimes announced on July 1 that she would be challenging Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in the upcoming election.

The following day, McConnell's campaign team released an auto-tuned campaign video, pitching Grimes as self-centered (repeating "I wanna thank me, me, me") and unwilling to compromise. The spoof, alluding to Grimes' 2011 campaign video, asks, "What rhymes with Alison Lundergan Grimes?"

Grimes' newly released video features footage from that 2011 campaign spot, which starred Grimes' grandmothers, Elsie and Thelma. Grimes calls the 2013 video and her latest campaign a tribute to Thelma, who passed away shortly after filming the ad.

"She was 92 years old and would have been so proud to see this day," Grimes says in the spot.

She also responds to McConnell's recent video.

"Your campaign wants to play silly games about where I am and where I stand," Grimes says. "Well, I'm right here in Kentucky, Senator, where I'll be holding you accountable."

Grimes' grandmother Elsie appears at the end of the video, ready to kickoff the campaign.

"What rhymes with Mitch?" Elsie asks. "It's time to switch. Let's get started honey, this one's for Thelma."
