Eileen Brennan Dead: 'The Last Picture Show' Actress Dies at 80

'The Last Picture Show' Star Dies

Actress Eileen Brennan died on July 28 at the age of 80.

Brennan was probably best known for playing the role of Genevieve in "The Last Picture Show." But she was an Oscar contender in the 1980 film "Private Benjamin," opposite Goldie Hawn.

Brennan's Hollywood career was almost cut short in 1982, when a car accident changed her life. She was hit by an oncoming car and suffered leg, face and eye injuries. Those injuries brought about dependencies on antidepressants and anti-anxiety medication, as well as an addiction to prescription pain pills.

After attempting a return to acting in 1984 in "Off The Rack," Brennan checked herself into the Betty Ford Rehab Center for six weeks.

Celebrities like Eric McCormack and Michael McKean have already taken to Twitter to remember Brennan.

She is survived by her sons Sam and Patrick, her daughter-in-law Jessica and her grandchildren Liam and Maggie.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported that Eileen Brennan was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in "The Last Picture Show." She was nominated for a BAFTA Award.
