Gwyneth Paltrow's Craziest Diet Stories

Gwyneth Paltrow's Hallucinations

Gwyneth Paltrow has come under fire for her "crazy" diet habits. Whether it's the elimination diet or her superhuman exercise routine, she just can't seem to catch a break.

Paltrow has always openly admitted to being a fan of detoxes, and this year she tried the Elimination Diet, which she says cuts out processed foods and additives. But not without trying other, more extreme "cleanses" first.

"I've done juice cleanses in the past, and in my twenties I did the Master Cleanse, which left me hallucinating after 10 days," she said.

Whoa.

According to HuffPost blogger Joanna Dolgoff, M.D., the premise of a "detox," in which people go to extreme measures to rid their bodies of chemicals, isn't backed up by medicine. "Toxins enter the body through food or water, chemicals used to grow or prepare food, and even the air that we breathe," Dolgoff explains. "Luckily, our bodies have the ability to process those toxins through organs like the liver and kidneys and eliminate them in the form of sweat, urine and feces."

What's more, a cleanse probably won't result in lasting weight loss.

"The Master Cleanse (aka lemonade diet) requires limiting our food intake to water with lemons, laxative tea and salt water in order to "cleanse" the body. Weight loss may occur from this diet but it is mainly from loss of water, not from fat loss. If used over a long period of time, the body will begin to break down muscle mass for energy."
