"Racoonda" based on “Golconde (Golconda)" 1953
The man behind the glorious internet gem, who goes by the name Breshvic, explained his motivations in an email to The Huffington Post.
"I thought people were missing the rich vein of similarity between the surrealists and those early games. Mario's world is inhabited by anthropomorphic turtles, dragons, mushroom people, dinosaurs, plant and fungi-life that imbues magical powers... really weird, imaginative stuff that we now just accept. But people played them because it's like escaping into a fantastic dream! You can walk on smiling clouds. Leaves let you become raccoons. The sun is out to get you."
