David Shuster Named Al Jazeera America Anchor

Al Jazeera America announced on Friday that David Shuster is joining the network as an anchor.

He will be based in New York, according to the network's announcement. The news was first reported by The Huffington Post's Michael Calderone in July.

“I’ve followed Al Jazeera since I covered the Iraq War in 2003 from Doha,” Shuster said in a statement on Friday. “The organization’s fearless efforts to give a voice to the voiceless have always struck a chord in me. It’s an honor to help carry on that unique mission on an American channel and for an American audience.” Meanwhile, Marcy McGinnis, the network's senior vice-president of newsgathering, praised Shuster's experience.

Shuster was previously an anchor at Current TV, which was purchased by Al Jazeera earlier this year. The network, which is set to launch August 20, has been hiring hundreds of staffers and finalizing its programming in recent months. Shuster will join roster of the network's personalities, which includes Ali Velshi, Joie Chen and Soledad O'Brien.
