On September 7, 2006, Anna Nicole Smith gave birth to a daughter she named Dannielynn. Though Smith named her former lawyer Howard K. Stern as Dannielynn's father on the birth certificate, Smith's ex Larry Birkhead firmly believed he was actually the child's biological dad.
Following a lawsuit that Birkhead filed a month after Dannielynn's birth (and four months before Smith's death), an April 2007 paternity test revealed that Birkhead was indeed Dannielynn's father. Elated, Birkhead made a statement on the steps outside of the courthouse the day the news broke.
"I hate to be the one that told you this, but, I told you so!" he had said back then, raising his arms in triumph.
"Oprah: Where Are They Now?" recently caught up with Birkhead, who says he looks back on that life-changing moment with some embarrassment.
"When they had given me the results of the paternity test, I call that my 'douchebag moment,'" Birkhead says in the above video. "I hope I can say that on TV…"
Though he chuckles now, Birkhead admits that his reaction may have been due to the mounting drama in the entire paternity situation. "In my defense, I guess, it became a soap opera," he explains. "[The paternity results] put an end to this whole circus."
Birkhead reveals more about his life since getting custody of Dannielynn on "Oprah: Where Are They Now?" airing Sunday, August 11, at 10 p.m. ET on OWN.
