How Can Introverts Make More Friends? Expert Says It's All In The Planning

Introvert Finds Interesting Way To Make New Friends

Introverts often express anxiety about large group settings like cocktail parties, but according to one expert, they're actually the best conversationalists at these events.

Dr. Jennifer Kahnweiler, the author of "Quiet Influence: The Introvert's Guide to Making a Difference," said introverts are usually embraced at parties because their strong listening skills make them attractive to others.

"I love to see how introverts really use their strength at listening and focused conversations to bring out the best in other people," Kahnweiler told HuffPost Live's Nancy Redd. "They constantly get the comment ... 'I feel so connected to her.'"

Kahnweiler said she often advises introverts to prepare for parties by planning a few questions beforehand.

"Figure out what the topic's going to be that people are going to be talking about," she said.

Psychologist Irene Levine said she finds keeping up-to-date on popular culture helps her in those settings, while blogger Pamela Hodges said just asking basic questions like "What did you do today?" often helps her converse with others.

"If I keep asking questions, they'll walk away thinking, 'Wow, she's a really good conversationalist,'" Hodges said. "They don't know anything about me, but they felt like I made some sort of contact with them."
