1924 Pullman Couch Company Ad Oversells Sofa Beds, Which Were Around Back Then (PHOTO)

Sofa beds are many things -- uncomfortable, hard to unfold, a compromise. Note that we did not say they are a "restful bed."

If the aforementioned downsides of the humble sofa bed are true now, we can only imagine what they felt like in 1924, when this advertisement was originally published.

The Pullman Couch company, which was based in Chicago, Illinois, was known for their inventive approach to mass market and custom furniture. Yes, particularly the Davenport Bed, which operated much in the same manner as a sofa bed. It became one of their signature products.
