Rodney Eugene Long, Escaped Inmate, Shot And Killed By Hostage Jerome Mauderly

An escaped inmate in Iowa was shot and killed by a 71-year-old homeowner Tuesday after taking the man and his wife hostage for four hours.

On Sunday, Rodney Eugene Long, 38, broke out of the Clarinda Correctional Facility, where he was serving a five-year sentence for burglary, KETV reported.

Long shot a sheriff's deputy, then stole the deputy's car, leading officials on a 40-minute chase before he crashed the vehicle and took off running into a wooded area, according to the Daily Iowegian. A massive manhunt ensued Monday.

That night at about 10:15, Long broke into the Bedford home of 71-year-old Jerome Mauderly and his wife, 66-year-old Carolyn Mauderly, the Des Moines Register reported. The Mauderleys told officials that Long held them in their bedrooms, used their cell phones and disabled the other phones in the home. Authorities have not said who Long was calling.

After about four hours, the couple was able to obtain access to a shotgun kept in their home, and Jerome Mauderly fatally shot Long.

The Mauderleys were uninjured, and the deputy shot by Long is in stable condition and expected to fully recover.
