Ryan Carnan Dead: Officers Fatally Shoot Armed Suspect On Tractor After He Kills His Mother

Armed Man On Tractor Shot Dead By Police After Killing Mother

Police in California fatally shot an armed man on a tractor after he allegedly killed his mother and set her house on fire.

Ryan Carnan, 29, was killed by Simi Valley police officers on Saturday at about 5 p.m., shortly after authorities found a body believe to be Carnan's mother inside her burning home, according to NBC Los Angeles. After the body was found, police started receiving calls that an armed man later identified as Carnan was driving through the neighborhood on a tractor, firing on bystanders.

Carnan reportedly shot at several residents he encountered on the street, but nobody else was injured. Responding officers opened fire on Carnan when they "were confronted with a deadly force situation," according to a press release obtained by the Ventura County Star.

"Based on the information that was being received by the 911 callers that a subject was actively shooting a firearm in a residential neighborhood, the heroic actions of the officers involved cannot be understated," the press release stated.

It is believed that Carnan lit the house on fire before climbing into his tractor. Police recovered a handgun from the vehicle, according to the New York Daily News.

It remains unclear what sparked the rampage. Police reportedly responded to a mental health call at the Carnan home in 2008, but no further details on the call were available.
